Partying in Utila, Honduras

Where to Stay
The party hostels here are all scuba dive centres.  Many backpackers stay at Underwater Vision and things can get pretty sloppy there.  Parrots is a good place to stay as well, since it is right in the middle of the main strip and the best bar in Utila is literally underneath it. A lot of people like Alton’s as well.

Where to Party
Nights in Utila are very hit or miss. Some nights hostels, such as Alton’s and Underwater Vision will have their own events and their guests won’t go out to the bars. Most nights, however, Tranquila Bar (in Parrots) gets pretty rowdy. Travellers also like making stops at Skid Row and Rehab (even though they aren’t that busy) to get free tank tops for drinking around 5 of their signature shots in a row. Also check out Treetanic, a cool low-key outdoor bar that looks like Gaudi could have designed it (many people start their night here). Two nights a week, Kamikaze beach club has insane parties just off of the main strip on the beach. They have smoke, lasers, DJs and pretty much every local and tourist will go.

However, the best party in Utila happens once a year in August on a little island a quick water taxi ride away. It is called Sunjam and international DJs spin techno till the sun rises.

Utila is much busier the week before so make sure you book a hostel/dive centre in advance. If you cannot be in Utila for Sunjam try to be there over a full moon night, as they host an electronic music event every month called Moondust.

Music
At bars like Tranquila and elsewhere on the water expect to hear Reggaeton and Top 40.  However, Utila is probably the best place for a techno fan to visit in Central America. Sometimes the DJ at Kamikaze will spin entire techno sets later in the night.  Sunjam will also guarantee amazing music, as will the monthly Moondust events.

During the Day
Almost everyone here scuba dives during the day.  You can get certified here for really cheap (under $300 and you get free accommodations).  If you don’t like scuba diving it is still a cool island to roam around and you can find good food at Munchies and RJs.  They also have a man-made beach.
